This was a commission for a boutique hotel in Central London, UK. Mark worked closely with the client who wanted the Ammonite bronze and gold sculpture as wall sculpture art to shine at the heart of a water feature. Illuminated, the sculpture can be enjoyed both day and night.
The gold plated surface of the bronze sculpture contrasts with the organic, warm, soft chestnut interior of the Ammonite cells that will mellow and patinate with age. The bright, reflective gold surface of the sculpture reflects the glistening shimmering pool creating an aesthetic delight which will retain it’s lustre with the passing of time.
Mark Reed is intrigued by the mechanics of natural forms and the way they contribute to the aesthetic appearance of a plant or animal. Reed is fascinated by the juxtaposition of the alien and yet familiar, the alliance of science and nature, so the fractal spiral occurs in his bronze ‘Ammonite Slice’ Sculpture and this mathematical form- the Fibonacci sequence, is found from the ancient ammonite fossil to the tips of the unfurling fern.
The figurative ‘Ammonite Slice’ is a dramatic centrepiece sculpture in a private house or contemporary hotel, it draws the eye and frames a hedge in a landscaped garden, among the lilting flowers in a cottage garden or as a focal point on a terrace in an urban garden. The ‘Ammonite Slice ‘ brings the exterior alive in a beachside villa or superyacht interior. It can also be scaled up to form a monumental sculpture.
